An unseen presence, undeniable yet invisible, enters the void—offering guidance, calm, and reassurance. This phenomenon, known as the “Third Man Factor,” was popularized by Sir Ernest Shackleton, who sensed an incorporeal companion during the final, grueling leg of his Antarctic expedition. In moments of extreme isolation, this guiding presence may lead one to safety, much like the search for shelter from relentless winds.
We can only speculate about what people in the 18th century endured as they navigated unfamiliar territories and harsh climates. Along the Red and Assiniboine rivers, the landscape presented challenges and opportunities for survival. In moments of desperation, what mental and physical safeguards did they create? Building on this, we envisioned a shelter—whether a naturally formed refuge in the snowy terrain or one shaped by human imagination.
